Finding Your Senses: Adaptation Ability

Co-Curated by Cathy Carey and Josie Rodriguez

"Finding Your Senses" serves as a catalyst for introspection, empathy, and appreciation of the diverse ways in which humans perceive and experience the world. By fostering a deeper understanding of the mutable nature of sensory perception, the exhibit encourages visitors to embrace differences, cultivate empathy, and celebrate the richness of human experience. The exhibit prompts reflection on how alterations in sensory perception, whether due to trauma or aging, can profoundly affect individuals and communal understanding.

This invitational exhibit delves into the fascinating realm of sensory perception. Artists participating in this event will present works that invite viewers to contemplate the profound influence of our senses. Some pieces will explore how alterations in sensory perception, whether due to trauma or aging, can fundamentally shape individual experiences. Others will examine the senses as a dynamic process through which we engage with and interpret the world around us. This exhibit promises to be a captivating exploration of the human experience through the lens of our senses. All mediums from fiber, painting, collage, assemblage, sculpture, light, photography, auditory, olfactory and visual experiences are encouraged, as well as taste and touch curated encounters.

As part of your submission, you are requested to write up an Artwork Statement about your piece/pieces of art describing the relationship to the theme. Consider not using the idea of “disability”, rather document the ability and the courage it takes to adapt. We’ll host opportunities for local residents to respond to your work through making, discussing, and viewing programs.

Cathy Carey, Director of Programming will work with each artist to select pieces for the show. Additionally, for all of our exhibits, we host related programming to encourage visitors to explore the art through making, viewing, or discussing experiences. To that end, we invite exhibiting artists to participate in community-based art workshops, docent-led tours, artist panels, or live art-making demos.
