Peggy Wiedemann
Peggy graduated from UCLA with a degree in Fine Arts. She explored oil painting, drawing, sculpture and ceramics before becoming a fiber artist. As a fiber artist she uses a wide variety of materials: both natural and found objects. She is interested in creating both positive and negative space. Movement is important in her work. Also, shapes and color are important to her. She loves trying new things. Peggy starts working with an idea and then lets the work evolve as she goes. The play among mind, hands and materials continually stimulates the creative process and leads her work in new directions.
StatementAs a contemporary fiber artist, I have a strong preference for natural fibers and materials. The shapes, design and colors in the materials inspire the work. Natural materials, such as pine needles, Irish linen thread and cordage have a life and character of their own. I sometimes like to combine these natural materials with found objects. The play among hands, mind, and materials continually stimulates the creative process and leads my work in new directions. Using traditional basketry materials in sometimes unorthodox ways, I want to create designs, shapes and styles that stretch the imaginations and react with the senses.
